As we all know, a domain cannot function without a DNS Zone. Although by adding a domain on a server a DNS zone is created by default, you may need to make some changes at some point.

In this article, we will present the options available in this interface. To access it, you need to login into your cPanel account and go to Domains >> Zone Editor.

In this window, you will be able to easily add three types of records (most common ones) in the DNS zone, namely A, CNAME, and MX records. In order to add an entry, click on the record type you want to add and enter the necessary information, then click on Add.

You can access a more complex interface by clicking the Manage option, in front of every domain available in your account.

There are some DNS zone settings that are more common, such as:

- A - associates a domain to an IP address;

- CNAME - defines aliases through the association of a domain to another one; this way, it can be used to define more domains without specifying every time an IP addresses; for example, domain.com points to 89.42.217.196; we could add a CNAME for mail.domain.com to domain.com;

Note! A CNAME cannot be added for domain.com directly, it needs to have an A record.

- TXT - these entries are usually DKIM and SPF, necessary for email validation and spoofing prevention;

- MX - these entries in the DNS zone determine which server is responsible for the domain used.

Adding DNS entries in cPanel

Step 1: From Manage, go to +Add Record.

Step 2: Enter the necessary information:

In the first field, add the record name (for example domain.com or subdomain);

TTL - it can be standard in case you don't have other entries specifying another value;

Type - here you need to select the record type you want to add (A, CNAME, TXT, MX);

Record - enter the information corresponding to the record you want to add; this field changes depending on the type of entry selected; for example, for an A record, enter the IP address of the domain you need to point to, for a CNAME record you need to add the domain to which you need to add the record and for an MX record - mail.domain.com.

Step 3: Click on the Add Record button.

That is it, the record has been added. 

Editing entries in the DNS zone

Step 1: Select the domain for which you want to modify the DNS Zone and click on Manage.

Step 2: In the window that opens you will be able to notice the existing entries, and on the right side of the screen, under the Actions column, you have the Edit button.

Edit the information. From here you can change even the record type, from A to CNAME.

Step 3: Click on the Save Record button.

Deleting records in the DNS zone

After you access the editing page of the DNS zone according to the aforementioned instructions, if you want to delete a DNS record it is sufficient to click on the Delete button in front of the entry that needs to be removed and confirm the action.
